Press

No genre nor instrument limits Keiji Haino's expression and devotion to music. A true legend in his own right, with an unmistakable presence, power and depth. Haino has continued to amaze and challenge the listener since the 1970s and he seem to never stop experimenting.

On this session it was the drums that talked to Haino. But the drums are only a starting point for his musical endeavor with Guro Moe.

Guro Moe's experimental rock band MoE have collaborated with Haino several times live in Japan. But on this recording Moe and Haino entered Athletic Sound in Norway as a duo, with drums and octobass as the only planned frame. And plans are always made to be altered!

The two improvisers are literally playing with the instruments to force each other out on a journey that seems to have no harbor in sight. Creating open forms, structures and textures that can take them further away from any safe harbor, only for the sake of creating duo music in the moment. But their voices melt together and creates a natural flow in time and space.

This is another Haino album that is impossible to put into a genre or style, and makes little effort to make it easy for the listener. It is simple another manifest of Hainos free, mysterious and spontaneous musical soul.

The voice is maybe what brings the two performers together in the first place. Both Haino and Moe usually brings in vocal elements in all of their music. It is as if their voice can not be separated from their music and is the source of their creative minds. Some parts even contains songlike structures that brings back memories from Hainos legendary solo album “Watashi Dake?”

The double CD contains a full bonus disc where Haino and Moe explore the dynamics of the drum and bass constellation, moving into even more uncharted territory.

Aaron Turners expressive album art underlines complexity in both Haino and Moes musical outlets but also serves as an art work on its own terms.
