First, Everything is the debut album under his own name from Norwegian drummer and composer Runar Netland, released September 4 on Dugnad rec.
Rooted in an organic approach to contemporary jazz, the album explores rhythm, form and improvisation through a gradual movement from simplicity to complexity and from stillness to motion. Composed structures coexist with open improvisation, while contrasts — mono and stereo, solitude and community, uncertainty and hope — shape the record’s musical and emotional trajectory.
Much of the music grew out of Netland’s many hours spent skiing and running through Lillomarka and Nordmarka in Oslo. The rhythmic patterns and endless cycles of the natural world became central to the project, alongside ideas of repetition, change and permanence. The title First, Everything reflects both Netland’s first album as a bandleader and the many facets of life contained within it: joy, sorrow, curiosity, longing, stillness and calm.
Netland’s drums, piano, synthesizers, drum machines, samples and effects are woven into an ensemble featuring Andreas Ulvo on piano, Mathias Marstrander on pedal steel and acoustic guitar, Martin Ulltang on double bass, Lyder Øvreås Røed on trumpet, Sunniva Lilian Shaw Of-Tordarroch on cello, and Olav Barmen Trollebø on synthesizer and synth bass.
First, Everything was composed, arranged and produced by Runar Netland, mixed by Njål Paulsberg and mastered by Espen Høydalsvik. Available on vinyl, CD and digital.
Artist bio
Runar Netland is a Norwegian drummer, composer and musician from Stryn, based in Oslo since 2013. Growing up in a musical family, he became involved with music from an early age through school band, music school, TenSing, UKM and a wide range of local performances and ensembles.
Netland holds a master’s degree in performing rhythmic music from NLA Staffeldtsgate and has spent close to a decade working professionally as a freelance, studio and band musician. His work includes collaborations and performances with artists and projects including Aleks Grey and Oh Blonde, alongside numerous other musicians from Norway’s jazz, pop and independent music scenes.
Alongside this work, Netland has developed a personal musical language centred on rhythm, improvisation, space and the relationship between acoustic and electronic sound. His debut album under his own name, First, Everything, brings these strands together in a project shaped by both ensemble interaction and his longstanding connection to movement, landscape and the natural world.
