3 pianos is an album made by a unique piano ensemble consisting of three musicians with different backgrounds and experience. The curiosity for the piano and its countless possibilities was the outset whereas the wish to bend the common boundaries for piano music was the background for this project. The ensemble makes music with clear connections to the music and the ideas of the twentieth century. The musicians develop the material in their own way by focusing on elements like tuning, register, intervals and dynamics. The material includes both written compositions and improvised pieces. The trio has a sophisticated way of instant-composing, and this quality reflects both the musicians individuality as well as there orientation towards interplay.
Artist bio
Ayumi Tanaka is a Japanese-born, Norway-based pianist and composer known for her delicate touch, spacious phrasing, and deep sensitivity to sound and silence. A key figure in the Scandinavian jazz and improvised music scene, she gained international recognition through her trio recordings on ECM Records. Her playing often draws from both European jazz aesthetics and Japanese musical sensibilities, creating a quiet yet emotionally rich musical language.
Swedish pianist Johan Lindvall is recognized for his intimate, understated solo work and refined sense of melody, often exploring stillness and resonance in a highly personal way. Norwegian pianist and composer Christian Wallumrød is widely acclaimed for his innovative approach to jazz and contemporary music, combining elements of folk, church music, and experimental composition. Through the Christian Wallumrød Ensemble and numerous solo projects, he has developed a distinctive, contemplative sound world that has made him an influential voice in modern Nordic music.
