On «Tolerance Picante» MoE joins forces with the relentless saxophone player, Mette Rasmussen.  «Tolerancia Picante» is the document, the result or the map of their individual paths. Paths that leads to a mix of no wave, sludge, rock and free jazz. The sound of a world without empathy, filled with contradictions, lies and abuse of power. The sound of a world that wants to build walls rather than build understanding. This is jazz, this is rock and this is noise. MoE/Mette Rasmussen creates contradictions that equals composition, improvisation and spontaneity. «Tolerance Picante» comes with liner notes written by the experimental poet Anne Waldman. Waldman is closely connected to the Beat poetry, and comments on important aspects of the music and contributes with a powerful comment to «Tolerance Picante».

After the recording session, MoE and Rasmussen did a Mexican tour together. This tour broke down walls and barrieres in their musical relationship and rebuilt a strong fundament that embraced new experiments, new meetings and new understandings. The music changed meaning and the recording would never been the same without this tour. MoE/Mette Rasmussen offered the audience of Mexico a new flavour, and the reception was filled with tolerance and respect.

By mixing improvisational structures with loose compositional ideas, «Tolerancia Picante» is a document of a work flow that couldn’t be stopped by conventional approaches. Mixed and coloured by Kyrre Laastad, the music wasn’t finished until Lasse Marhaug mastered the sound and the final files was zipped. Creativity should be held responsible. Creativity should be the excuse. Creativity is what makes humans human. Open-mindedness leads you to new experiences, new knowledge, new ground.

The mix of Rasmussens modern and powerful saxophone playing with MoE’s open minded view on todays rock, «Tolerance Picante» is nothing but a Scandinavian mixture that is hard to stay indifferent to. Love and hate are equally strong feelings, and a necessity to feel alive.

Artist bio

Over the years MoE has grown to become one of Europe’s leading live bands. With concerts in more than 25 countries on four continents, the band earned their reputation the old fashioned way, and is a must see live act. MoE has collaborated with musicians such as Keiji Haino, Pain Jerk, Lasse Marhaug, Okkyung Lee and now Mette Rasmussen. Only time will show where the music will take them next, but where there are creativity and spontaneity, MoE will track it down. MoE is more than a rock band.

Rasmussen is one of the most prominent voices on saxophone in modern improvisation of today. She tours continuously around the world with bands like Cocaine Piss, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, as a solo act, with musicians like Alan Silva, Chris Corsano or her own quintet. Rasmussen works on exploring the natural rawness of her instrument – experimenting on what the saxophone is capable of in sound and expression, and assert her own individual sound in piercingly high tones and controlled outbursts of free playing.
